Mongolian style filigree and hand painted enamel jewelry was developed during the Russian influence of the past 1000 year history.  Originally made for the Mongolians, in the 1700’s only the empresses were allowed to wear the jewelry.

This style of workmanship is similar to the technique used to make the original Faberge eggs which were made of gold and precious stones. The filigree work is done by hand with tweezers and the core designs are fired in a kiln, then fused together with silver dust.  Enamel work is done by hand then with one more moment in the kiln, the beauty and shine of the enamel is set.  The final step is set to set stones.

We’ve added a few new designs to carry you through the holidays!  Enjoy the historical craftsmanship of Mongolia.Naran

Rocha Carvao is a small jewelry studio in Porto, Portugal where I met with Maria and Paulo Barbosa.   Maria is a former school teacher who studied design and launched her career creating artistic jewelry.  Maria is influenced by the Lalique period and the beauty of Portugal.  Because the jewelery is designed by a woman, you can be assured the designs are comfortable.

“Ottoman jewelry had to be ornate and extremely colourful. Jewellers used a variety of metals in order to fashion a piece of jewelry, which is the main difference from European jewelry where the same metal is repeated. Another feature of Ottoman jewelry is that instead of strict symmetry, the nature of the stone and metal are given prominence. For instance, the natural characteristics of a ruby and emerald reflect the Ottoman feature of jewelry.”  For more ……http://www.turkishculture.org/pages.php?ChildID=149&ParentID=10&ID=46&ChildID1=149

Delicate and dynamic – turquoise earrings by Turkish designer, Yeliz Titiz for Sura Jewelry, these earrings are fantastic for casual or a night out on the town.  Notice the intricacy of the workmanship by the artisans who hand dip the earrings in 24K gold before setting the pearls and large turquoise stones.

“Steeped with history and mystery it is truly a captivating stone. Turquoise history dates back over 6000 years. Archeological and literary references to the stone predate the Christian era by five millennia. It has been unearthed in tombs from ancient Egypt – specifically the 4 bracelets of Queen Zar, found on her mummified arm. These date back to the second ruler of the Egypt’s First Dynasty, approximately 5500 B.C.  Aristotle and Pliny both refer to turquoise. Marco Polo even wrote about it. Turquoise has always been considered a stone of life.” For more …. http://www.jewelry-paideia.com/reference/ref-gemstone-turquoise-1.php

Turquoise is more than a look, it’s a meaningful historical stone.
